Social Security adds $75 to the average retirement check. SSI's federal standard rises $35.
The average retired worker gets about $75 more in January. A parent on the federal SSI standard gets about $35 on December 31. Last year, $17.90 of a $56 raise went to the Medicare premium before anyone bought groceries.

On October 14, Social Security raised benefits 3.6 percent for 2027. The average retired worker goes from $2,095 a month to $2,170, about $75 more, in the January payment. Last year's raise on that same average was 2.8 percent, about $56. Before anyone treats $75 as the number that clears the account, look at which program actually pays the parent.
Supplemental Security Income is the federal cash benefit for people with very low income and little that Social Security counts as savings. The federal standard for one person rises from $994 to $1,029. That is about $35, and it lands on December 31, because New Year's Day pushes the January payment forward. A couple on that standard goes from $1,491 to $1,544, about $53. About 7.3 million people receive SSI, and some of them also receive a Social Security check. Some states add their own payment on top. The $1,029 is the federal floor.
Pew Research Center's 2024 look at the 2022 census found that 34 percent of Asian adults age 65 and older lived in lower-income households. Among Asian adults ages 30 to 44, the share was 18 percent. The $75 is the average retired worker on the agency's fact sheet. In a lot of these families the deposit to plan around is closer to $35.
The savings cap did not get a raise with the check. One person on SSI can still have $2,000 in resources the agency counts. A couple can have $3,000. A checking balance counts. If a sibling has been adding a little each month so a parent has cash for a copay, that transfer can land on the wrong side of $2,000. Read the letter before anyone sends more.
The 3.6 percent is built on a wage earner's price index. Social Security has to use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Over the year that ended in September, that index rose enough to round to 3.6 percent. It follows people who are still on a payroll. A month that is mostly rent and medicine can still feel tight after a raise calculated on someone else's basket.
Last year shows why the gross raise is the wrong number to spend. The average retirement check rose about $56, and the Medicare Part B premium, the monthly charge for doctor visits and outpatient care, rose $17.90, from $185 to $202.90. For someone paying that standard premium out of the check, a third of the raise was gone before groceries. The Medicare trustees' report projects $209.50 for 2027, about $6.60 more than this year's $202.90. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has not published the real premium. It shows up in the online Social Security account in late November.
There is a protection if the premium is deducted from a Social Security check and the person is not paying the high-income surcharge. The premium increase is not supposed to leave a smaller net payment than the year before. Medicaid often pays the Part B bill for someone on SSI, which is a different setup. On the average $75 raise, a projected $7 premium fits. On a small Social Security check, wait for the line that shows the deduction.
The same announcement bills the adult child. Wages subject to the 6.2 percent Social Security tax rise from $184,500 to $192,300. Earn at least the new cap and you pay that tax on an extra $7,800, about $484 for the year. The employer pays another $484. Medicare's 1.45 percent tax still applies to every dollar of wages. The withholding comes out of a paycheck. The raise goes into a parent's account.
A parent who collects and still takes shifts has a ceiling too. Full retirement age is the birthday when that ceiling lifts. For anyone born in 1960 or later, it is 67. Under that birthday, 2027 allows $25,560 in earnings before Social Security withholds benefits, then holds back $1 for every $2 earned. In the year full retirement age arrives, the limit is $67,920, and the holdback is $1 for every $3, only in the months before the birthday. After that birthday, pay from a job leaves the check alone.
The personal number shows up soon. Open a my Social Security account and turn on paperless notices by November 18, and the letter is in the message center in late November. Wait, and a one-page notice comes by mail in December, with the new amount and any deduction printed on it. Send a photo of that page to the family chat.
The sibling who already calls the agency can start with Social Security Navigation for Adult Children of Immigrant Parents. First-Gen Retirement Planning Basics is for the check you will draw yourself. If a monthly wire goes out on top of this benefit, put the figure from the letter into the Family Support Budget Calculator next to that wire.
Take the current check and multiply by 1.036. Leave room next to it for the Part B premium. Last year that premium took $17.90 out of a $56 raise, and this year's premium is not printed yet.
This is educational reporting on the Social Security Administration's announcement and fact sheet, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services premium for 2026, a Medicare trustees projection, and a Pew analysis of census data, not benefits, tax, or Medicare advice. A state supplement or a withholding can change the deposit. The notice, and your own counsel, name the figure that counts.
