Filipino Canadian Book Festival

The Filipino Canadian Book Festival is back after a rest year: four days of diaspora literature, August 14-17, 2026, at the Museum of Vancouver and VS Creative Lab. Theme is Writing Our Diaspora: Literature Across Generations. Close to 30 authors sit across panels, workshops, a marketplace, and community programming. Iron Dog Books is the exclusive bookseller. Friday August 14 and Monday August 17 are open-mic nights at VS Creative Lab, 1884 Main Street (6:30-8:00 PM on the MOV schedule). Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16, move to the Museum of Vancouver, 1100 Chestnut Street in Vanier Park: marketplace 10:30 AM-5:00 PM with no ticket, daytime panels, and a 4:00 PM Saturday keynote. Tickets are free; RSVP is required per day.

Keynote speaker Adrian De Leon is a writer, poet, critic, and public historian. CBC Books named barangay: an offshore poem among 2021’s best Canadian poetry collections; Bundok: A Hinterland History of Filipino America took the 2024 Sally and Ken Owens Award from the Western History Association. Saturday’s talk, Stories that Carry Us Home, maps empire, migration, family, food, and memory. Festival co-founders include Nathalie De Los Santos (PilipinxPages), Dani Alcalde-Sidloski (Iron Dog Books, programming), and Asia Alcalde-Sidloski (outreach, film AD). Canada Council for the Arts funds the return. That named literary host is why this weekend still compounds when Ascend, TiE, and FCCC-GV calendars are quiet.

Kitsilano / Vanier Park is civic museum geography, not Richmond’s No. 3 Road and not Surrey’s Scott Road. Filipino residents are about 142,000 across the CMA, roughly 5.5%, and a large share of the region’s healthcare, service, and creative bench. This is how writers, booksellers, educators, and cultural operators actually gather in August: panels on inheritance and children’s literature, a marketplace without a badge fee, and a Main Street open mic for people who will never buy a GVBOT breakfast. Treat the marketplace as introduction time, not a quiet deal room.

VS Creative Lab on Main Street is a different transit hop from Chestnut. Confirm which night you are on before you drive. Buy books through Iron Dog on site or online; do not assume a random vendor table.

This weekend is right if you work Filipino Canadian arts, education, publishing, or cultural programming, or if you want the named literary floor rather than a park festival. Dumpling Festival on August 15 is the Coquitlam vendor day if that was your graph. Leave a manuscript cold-pitch in the bag unless you are on a panel; use the marketplace and the keynote lobby as relationship time.
