Mercury Fund Day at the Ion is a monthly founder program co-hosted by the Ion and Mercury Fund, the Houston venture firm that formerly billed the series as Software Day. The August installment is built for software operators who want mentor access and peer density at Houston’s Midtown innovation campus, not a generic open bar. Format runs office hours by application for a small set of early-stage software startups, then a public keynote or panel block, then networking. This month’s working conversation is framed around how enterprise software companies actually go AI-first: product experience, pricing, and hiring when the stack is rebuilt around AI rather than bolted on.
Speakers listed on the Ion page include Mustafa Ali (Growth at Twilio), Zafir Khan (Product at Meta, former Mercury intern), and Salim Gheewalla (founder of Utilitise), hosted by Heath Butler of Mercury Fund. Mercury is a Houston-rooted early-stage firm with a long software thesis; pairing the day with the Ion puts the room inside the Midtown innovation district that universities, corporate partners, and startups already use as a default meeting place. Gunderson Dettmer sponsors a networking happy hour afterward at Second Draught, which is the practical mixer after the formal program. Office hours are screened: Mercury’s application materials describe an ideal profile as pre-Series A software with early revenue. The public RSVP for the panel and networking is listed as free on the Ion calendar.
Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 3:30-7:00 PM CDT at the Ion Forum Stairs, 4201 Main Street. Register on the Ion District event page for the open program. Founders who want mentor office hours should apply separately through Mercury’s Mercury Days startup application and treat that as a different path than the public RSVP. Confirm speaker names and any capacity limits on the live page before you clear the calendar.
This room is right for Houston software founders, product and growth operators translating big-tech AI lessons into local companies, and investors or operators who want Mercury and Ion density without waiting for a once-a-year conference. Skip if you need a hard pitch slot on the public agenda, if your company is deep hardware or oilfield services with no software story, or if you only want diaspora-chamber deal flow. Bring a crisp one-liner about what you are building or advising, and budget Midtown parking or transit time. The Ion is not Medical Center or Energy Corridor; plan the commute accordingly.
