Citibank for first-gen and immigrant households

The global-network national first-gen story: Access Checking as a Bank On starter, ITIN openings in major metros, fee-free Citi-to-Citi Global Transfers, then Priority and Citigold as balances rise.

Educational bank profile for first-gen readers — not a ranking or personal recommendation.

Overview

Citibank is the U.S. consumer banking brand of Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C). Firm assets were about $2.89 trillion as of June 30, 2026. Unlike Chase’s coast-to-coast branch build, Citi’s U.S. retail footprint concentrates in major metros, with fee-free cash access marketed through a large Allpoint ATM partnership. For first-gen readers the product story is global connectivity more than branch count: Access Checking as a Bank On–certified low-cost starter (about $5 monthly, often $0 with $250-plus qualifying deposits or an owner age 23 or younger under mid-2026 materials), in-branch openings that can use an ITIN in metros where Citi has staff, Citibank Global Transfers that move money fee-free to other Citibank accounts in the U.S. and select countries, online international wires with a published $0 outbound fee when sent in foreign currency (FX markups still apply), and Citi Priority / Citigold relationship tiers for upwardly mobile households. Brand angle: open where the job metro already has a Citi branch, use Global Transfers when relatives already bank with Citi abroad, then compare remittance apps or corridor banks when the recipient is outside the Citi network.

Strengths

  • Citibank Global Transfers: fee-free Citi-to-Citi sends in the U.S. and select countries, with higher limits at Priority and Citigold
  • Access Checking: Bank On–certified low-cost starter with published fee-waiver paths
  • Metro retail plus Allpoint ATM access when a full Chase- or BofA-scale branch map is not the job
  • Priority and Citigold tiers for households stacking deposits and investments as income rises

Footprint

U.S. consumer branches clustered in major metropolitan markets rather than a 48-state walk-in grid. Cash access is often marketed through Citi ATMs plus the Allpoint surcharge-free network. Not a digital-only bank, and not Chase-scale branch density. Confirm your metro on the Citi locator and call ahead for ITIN account-opening practice.

Services

  • Consumer banking
  • Small business
  • Commercial / middle market
  • Wealth / private banking
  • Credit cards
  • Mortgages
  • International wires

Full metro retail menu: Access and Regular Checking, savings and CDs, credit cards, mortgages, small-business banking, Citi Priority / Citigold / Private Client wealth tiers, Global Transfers, and domestic/international wires. Published online wire tables commonly cite about $25 domestic outbound and about $35 international USD outbound on standard packages, with Priority and Citigold waiving many wire fees and online foreign-currency outbound often at $0 wire fee (exchange-rate markups apply). Global Transfers are separate from correspondent wires and only work when the recipient account is also at Citibank.

Best for

  • Recent arrivals / newcomers
  • Digital-first banking
  • Upwardly mobile professionals
  • Cross-border and trade complexity
  • Higher-net-worth / wealth desks
  • Credit building

Best fit when the first-gen job is global network more than national branch count: you land in a Citi metro, open Access or Regular Checking (often with an ITIN in branch), and can send fee-free Global Transfers to relatives who already hold Citibank accounts abroad. Strong default for upwardly mobile professionals aiming at Priority or Citigold relationship pricing, and for households that already banked with Citi in Asia, Latin America, or Europe before a U.S. move. Compared with Chase, Citi usually wins on Global Transfers and international brand continuity, while Chase typically wins on U.S. branch and ATM density and a packaged International Relocation Mortgage. Compared with Bank of America, Citi is thinner on published nonpermanent-resident education pages and Language Line marketing, stronger when the remittance rail is Citi-to-Citi. Compared with East West, Cathay, Hope, or CTBC USA, Citi wins on national product breadth and global wealth tiers, not on bilingual Asia trade desks.

Less ideal for: Households outside Citi’s U.S. metro branch map who need walk-in coverage everywhere, people whose family support recipients do not bank at Citibank (Global Transfers will not help), or shops that need Korean American / Chinese American CRE and SBA relationship banking more than a megabank logo.

Compelling offers

Checked against bank pages as of July 29, 2026. Bonuses, fee waivers, and rate specials change often. Confirm eligibility and end dates on the bank’s site before you plan around them.

  • Access Checking: Bank On starter

Access Checking is Citi’s Bank On–certified low-cost checking product. Published materials list a $5 monthly service fee that can drop to $0 with $250 or more in qualifying direct deposits or other qualifying transactions in the month, and mid-2026 updates also waive the fee for owners age 23 or younger. Designed as a simpler starter path than Priority or Citigold packages.

Confirm live fee-waiver rules in the Consumer Deposit Account Agreement. Branch availability for ITIN openings varies by metro. Access is not a substitute for comparing remittance apps on family-support FX.

  • New checking cash bonus: up to $1,500

New-to-Citi checking customers who open an eligible Regular Checking path through the promotional offer and deposit new-to-Citibank funds can earn tiered cash bonuses commonly reported as $500 around a $30,000 balance path and $1,500 around a $200,000 balance path, after funding within about 45 days and maintaining the qualifying balance for an additional window.

Offer windows reported through October 26, 2026. Exact tiers change; start from the live special-offers page. Large balance requirements make the top tier a Priority/Citigold story, not an Access Checking starter story.

Listed window through October 26, 2026.

  • ITIN account opening in major metros (in branch)

Independent 2026 ITIN banking guides consistently list Citibank among big banks that will open personal checking with an ITIN in place of an SSN when you apply in person with passport, ITIN documentation, and U.S. address proof. Practice is strongest in metros where Citi already staffs branches (for example New York, California, Texas, Florida, Illinois).

Citi does not publish a Chase-style standalone non-resident education article on every path. Call the specific branch before visiting. Online apps often still demand an SSN.

  • Citibank Global Transfers (Citi-to-Citi)

Global Transfers let eligible clients send money to other Citibank accounts in the U.S. and select countries with no transfer fee. Daily and weekly limits rise by relationship tier (standard packages commonly cited around $50,000 daily; Priority and Citigold higher). Useful when parents or siblings already hold Citi accounts abroad.

Only works Citi-to-Citi. If the recipient banks elsewhere, you are back to wires or a remittance app. FX still applies on foreign-currency legs; compare net received.

Citibank wire transfers / Global Transfers (Wise and Citi help summaries)

  • International wires with $0 online fee in foreign currency

Eligible clients can send domestic and international wires in Citi Online or the Citi Mobile app. Published standard pricing commonly cites about $25 domestic outbound, about $35 international USD outbound, about $15 inbound, with Priority and Citigold waiving many wire fees. Online outgoing wires in foreign currency are commonly listed at $0 wire fee, with exchange-rate markups included in Citi’s rate.

FX markups still drive all-in cost. Branch-assisted wires can price differently. Compare net received against Remitly, Wise, or a corridor bank for recurring family support.

    Citibank wire transfer services

  • Citi Priority and Citigold relationship tiers

Citi Priority and Citigold are relationship packages built on combined average monthly balances across eligible deposit and investment accounts (Priority commonly around the mid–five-figure CAMB band; Citigold commonly around $200,000-plus). Benefits marketed include preferred pricing, waived or reduced wire fees, and dedicated service paths for upwardly mobile first-gen households stacking cash and brokerage.

Failing to maintain the combined balance can convert you to a lower package with fees. Confirm live CAMB thresholds on Citi’s compare-accounts page before treating marketing tiers as permanent.
