TD Canada Trust New to Canada for newcomers
A Big Six bank with a packaged New to Canada offer — national branch density, long hours, and credit access without a Canadian bureau file for arrivals within five years.
Educational bank profile for first-gen readers — not a ranking or personal recommendation.
Overview
TD Canada Trust is the Canadian personal and commercial banking brand of The Toronto-Dominion Bank (TSX/NYSE: TD), one of North America’s largest banks by assets (about C$2.1 trillion as of April 30, 2026). The TD parent was formed in 1955 from the Bank of Toronto and The Dominion Bank; the Canada Trust retail franchise was acquired in 2000 and rebranded into today’s TD Canada Trust trade name. Investor materials cite roughly 1,042 Canadian retail branches and thousands of ATMs serving about 16 million Canadian personal and commercial clients. For first-gen readers the product story is the TD New to Canada Banking Package: eligibility for permanent residents, international students, and temporary residents in Canada five years or less who have never held a TD chequing account. Brand angle: mainstream Canadian banking with evening/Saturday branch culture, multilingual support, and a timed newcomer value stack — not an India-parent Schedule II bank, and not the same legal entity as TD Bank, N.A. in the United States.
Strengths
- New to Canada Banking Package with published PR / student / temporary-resident eligibility (≤5 years)
- National branch and ATM density plus historically longer weekday evening hours than peer Big Six brands
- Credit-card path marketed without Canadian credit history (up to $15,000 limit language) and Global Transfer fee relief for newcomers
- Branch support marketed in 80+ languages; EasyLine phone support marketed in up to ~200 languages
Footprint
Nationwide Canadian branch and digital banking network (about 1,042 Canadian retail branches and roughly 2,800+ ATMs in Q2 2026 disclosures). Separate U.S. retail network operates as TD Bank, N.A. (“America’s Most Convenient Bank”) — same parent logo, different accounts and deposit insurance. Not digital-only. Confirm local hours on td.com.
Services
- Consumer banking
- Small business
- Wealth / private banking
- Credit cards
- Mortgages
- International wires
- Newcomer program
Full Big Six retail menu: Unlimited Chequing and other plans, savings, credit cards, mortgages, TD Direct Investing, insurance, and business banking. New to Canada is the newcomer packaging layer. Cross-border products can link TD Canada Trust with TD Bank U.S. accounts, but transfers remain cross-border — balances are not shared automatically.
Best for
- Recent arrivals / newcomers
- Credit building
- Hands-on branch banking
- Language access and cultural fit
- Upwardly mobile professionals
Best fit when you want a mainstream Canadian banking identity with long branch hours and a packaged newcomer on-ramp: open Unlimited Chequing in branch, build Canadian credit without a prior bureau file, and send family support through TD Global Transfer while the first-year fee relief runs. Strong default for diaspora households landing in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, or Montreal who are not specifically optimizing for an India-subsidiary bank. Compared with BMO NewStart, TD’s marketed chequing fee waiver is 12 months (BMO’s Performance Plan can run 24 months) and pre-arrival opening is narrower (China/India call path with 75-day activation, not BMO’s broader digital pre-arrival list). Compared with Scotiabank StartRight, TD leans harder on evening branch access and multilingual desks; cash-bonus windows still need a live T&C check. Compared with ICICI Bank Canada, TD is national Big Six scale rather than India-parent familiarity. Do not assume a U.S. TD Bank debit card is “free” at TD Canada Trust ATMs — different banks under one parent.
Less ideal for: Households that mainly want an India-subsidiary Schedule II relationship (consider ICICI Bank Canada), people hunting a pure digital challenger with no Big Six branch model, or anyone confusing TD Canada Trust with TD Bank, N.A. U.S. accounts for day-to-day Canadian payroll and Interac.
Compelling offers
Checked against bank pages as of July 28, 2026. Bonuses, fee waivers, and rate specials change often. Confirm eligibility and end dates on the bank’s site before you plan around them.
New to Canada: Unlimited Chequing fee waiver + $500 cash
Eligible newcomers who open a TD Unlimited Chequing Account through the New to Canada package can pay no monthly account fee for one year (bank pages value that at up to $215.40; standard fee is $17.95/month). Separately, opening by October 1, 2026 and completing any two of recurring direct deposit, recurring pre-authorized debit of at least $50, or an online bill pay of at least $50 by December 2, 2026 can unlock $500 cash.
Must be PR, international student, or temporary resident for five years or less, never held a TD chequing account, and age of majority. Package enrollment is via branch appointment. After month 12 the fee returns unless you meet the $4,000 minimum daily balance waiver. Cash posts within about 12 weeks after conditions are met.
Listed window through October 1, 2026.
Every Day Savings: 4% bonus interest for 3 months
Open a new TD chequing account plus an eligible TD Every Day Savings Account and the bank markets a 4% bonus interest rate for three months on the savings side, with no monthly savings fee and free transfers to other TD accounts (one included external-style transaction per month on standard terms).
Bonus interest is promotional and time-limited. Base rates and balance tiers still matter after the promo. Confirm the live footnote on the newcomer offer page before parking a large float.
Listed window through October 1, 2026.
TD Global Transfer: no TD transfer fees for up to 12 months
New to Canada packaging highlights international sends via TD Global Transfer with no TD transfer fees for up to 12 months, plus Western Union fee rebates on eligible cash-pickup style sends (bank Global Transfer pages describe both bank-to-bank and agent-location rails).
Foreign-exchange rates and intermediary/recipient fees still drive the all-in cost. Compare net received against a remittance app you already trust. Limits apply (for example bank-to-bank marketing cites up to $10,000 per transaction / 24 hours).
Credit without Canadian credit history (up to $15,000 limit language)
TD markets newcomer credit-card access without Canadian credit history, including Cash Back Visa and Aeroplan Visa Platinum welcome offers that must be approved and opened by October 1, 2026, plus package language about credit limits up to $15,000 when you bank with TD.
Subject to credit approval and identity/status documents. Annual fees, interest rates, and welcome-bonus spend rules still apply. Aeroplan first-year annual-fee waiver and points offers have their own 90-day active-account conditions.
Listed window through October 1, 2026.
China / India pre-arrival setup (75-day activation)
If you currently live in China or India, TD lets you call collect to set up an account before arrival, then visit a Canadian branch within 75 days to activate. Bring your Canadian immigration visa when you call (China: 1-855-537-5355; India: 416-351-0613).
Other countries generally must arrive first and book a branch appointment. New to Canada package benefits still require meeting eligibility and product conditions at activation.
